How to boot from VHD file (Windows 10 Preview)

Image
Although it is now easy to test things in a virtual machine it is still something that require, or work better, on a physical installation. Among other Hyper-V or devices with touch screen. So now when "Windows 10 Technical Preview" is here it is an appropriate time to go through how to use the VHD files as a disk to install the OS. Which makes it possible to start the OS directly without going through a hypervisor, even though we use a VHD file as disk. You need to have the Pro or Enterprise version of Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1   I will assume that you have downloaded the required ISO file, links can be found in my blog post http://olavtvedt.blogspot.no/2014/10/microsoft-jumps-over-number-9-windows.html

Windows 10 - Modify The "Start Menu" Or Change To The "Start Screen"?

Image
With Windows 10 you get your "Start Button" back if you are using a device with a keyboard. On devices without keyboard (touch display) or with devices with removable keyboard with the keyboard deattached, it will be started with just about the same start screen as in Windows 8.1. It is now even better than the old Windows 7 button.

Microsoft jumps over the number 9, Windows 10 Technical Preview are here

Windows 10 can now be downloaded from MSDN or from http://preview.windows.com/  if you dont have MSDN access.     Preview site don't have the enterprise version, but it should soon be ready for download from the Technet evaluation center HERE . MSDN contains Windows 10 Enterprise and the Windows Server preview too. Server will be available later and also as a Azure VM :-)  And the version number are adding up to 10 (6+4)   :-) More info in Technet can be found here HERE

Extending the number of cpu cores in Azure

Image
As default, every customer in Azure gets twenty CPU cores.   Creating new computers will quickly need more than this. My experience is that most of the small computers still needs to be run as “Medium” you will then use two cores. That gives you ten VM’s in total.

Changing Windows product key (license) for a MDT OS deployment task

Image
Creating a new OS deployment task in MDT you will be asked to specify product key That’s easy enough, but what if you type in the wrong key or just want to change it (add it) later? You might even have gotten a new MAK. That is not as easy, you cannot do it from the graphical interface, you have to do it from one of the configuration files. Well you might to it from graphical interface by typing it in every time deploying a computer gets deployed but that is not a great solution.
